Our Areas of Study
Math: Calculations at individual levels, functional math to include: Money, Time & Measurements
Reading: We are reading a variety of novels that and using them to learn a variety of English skills. Students will also be working on reading at their own ability levels. I also have an online reading program that students can access from home.
Social Studies: Our US History this year that will give us a better understanding of how the events of the past helped create the world that exists today. The students really seem to enjoy this area of study. This year we will be starting with the founding of our government.
Science: We are using a science curriculum that we read, take notes, and support with material from our online Science curriculum as well as media resources. We will be beginning with the study of matter this year.
Cooking: We will be cooking in class and in FACS this year. This helps students work on their reading, math, and direction following skills in a fun and functional way.
Social Skills & Life Skills we work on daily as they come up as well as formally through a curriculum designed to address the many issues that students need to learn to deal with appropriately.
Community Trips: We go out into the community approximately 1 time a month. Our trips have been
reduced this year due to budget restraints, but we still have many opportunities to learn work skills both in and out of class. We work on very functional skills that reinforce what we’ve learned in school. We work on vocational skills at St. Johns by helping them unload food from the food bank for their food pantry, and by sorting clothes in their clothing center. We also work on our job skills at the library by washing childrens books. We often go out to eat at a variety of restaurants, and shop at Tops for items to make at school.
